Our Donors Speak!

We absolutely love this couple! Phyllis goes way back to grade school with me (Dana). So we’ve known each other almost all our lives. Amazingly, after spending 38 years on the mission field, she has always been a constant friend and we’ve never lost touch. We are so grateful for their friendship and for their partnership with Rehoboth Ministries!

We gladly support Rehoboth Ministries for a number of reasons.  However, the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Dana, Prit and John is the beautiful faces of the little children.  They seem to radiate God’s love. To see them worshipping and singing, praising our Lord and Savior – leaves no question in my mind.  We are so very thankful, if we have helped in any small way, to further the cause in Christ in Haiti. A Recent Graduate of IBAG Speaks

This is a great interview between Gary St Vil and our son, John. Gary was a former student at our Bible institute and shares different ways that IBAG ( Institut Biblique de l’Alliance de Gråce) helped mold him to be the leader that he is today. Gary is now working for Rehoboth Ministries and is doing a great job. His role is multi-faceted since he speaks English and he can serve in different capacities. He will be a liaison between our leaders and our other churches in Haiti as well as serve as a communicator between those on the field and our Board Directors here stateside. Gary is a member of our main church in Petite-Anse and has come a long way from the little boy who grew up on the church bench. Hiis parents were always active members in the church as well as the rest of the family.

Gary has been a tremendous help to me, Dana, in getting testimonies and pictures of two students each month to send to Orphans Promise. This has definitely lightened my load, especially going through chemo treatments. Gary will be responsible for teams which come to Haiti to get them settled and purchase any materials they may need for projects.

We are so thankful that Gary is on our team and we wish him the best! We are proud that Gary is home grown and shares Rehoboth’s ideals concerning leadership.

Fundraiser: So far, we have reduced our $25,000 goal to $18,014. We have just under $7,000 to go! Would you like to help us?

Finding the Humor in it all!

Wednesday, I had my third round of chemo. Thursday, I felt better than I had in a long time. I even felt like the old me! But, by Friday, I began the familiar descent into untold weakness and the attempt to stand on wobbly legs which could only carry me so far. I have slept and slept, only to wake up and sleep some more…. But, even during these times, I am reminded of my human frailty and utter dependence upon God and others.

In addition to giving thanks in all things, I have learned to even find humor in these situations. Today, I sat at the dining room table and gave Prit step-by-step instructions for making macaroni and cheese. Since it was a small amount, I told him to open up the can of chicken noodle soup and heat it up too. John is back home from Haiti and we planned to have a “threesome meal.” Somewhere between making these two meals, Prit thought that I had said to combine them. So, we had a new dish of macaroni and cheese + chicken soup. We had a good laugh over it and it was actually quite good! Prit gave me permission to share this tale because he’s good at poking fun at himself. In his defense, for someone who is not comfortable in the kitchen, he has made multiple trips back and forth to the kitchen to fetch Gatorade or some other item and constantly asks me if I need anything. Though it’s been a rough three days, I am blessed and encourage you to try to find the humor in it all! Here’s a scientifically known fact about laughter:

Fact: Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

Our Donors Speak!

Mark & Norma Lloyd

My wife Norma and I support Rehoboth Ministries for multiple reasons. Up front, when you consider the fact that Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, the need is tremendous. We have known Prit and Dana since our college days and we know firsthand that they are not only dedicated Christians, but exhibit the highest ethics and integrity in everything they do. We always know that any funds we send their way will be used in the right way. Further, we love their ministry focus; especially the focus on feeding children. It is significant that for some of these children, the food they receive from Rehoboth may be their only meal of the day. We support Prit, Dana, and Rehoboth Ministries with no hesitation!

Round three and other news…

Third Round

Wednesday, I am scheduled for my third round of chemo. I have been steadily working on the many responsibilities which this ministry requires while I have my regular strength. My chief goal following chemotherapy is to allow my body to rest. My white blood cell count takes a serious nose dive after these treatments. During these times, I have experienced a level of fatigue I did not know existed. As usual, I am asking for your prayer support and thank so many of you who have been faithful to remember me in so many ways. Your love and thoughtfulness continues to amaze me!

Fundraiser

Our goal of $25,000 towards our Bible School Fundraiser is now just below $19,000. This fundraiser is two-fold. Our professors badly need a raise as the cost of living in Haiti is exorbitant – and that’s to live very simply. Rehoboth’s goal is to augment their salaries as well as to provide scholarship money for our students to help them complete their studies. Your gift would mean so much during this time. Both our leaders and leaders-in-training would thank you! Can you help? Below is the information for how to give and you can earmark your donation Bible School.

A Special Thanks

A special thanks goes out to those of you who have responded to this need and for those who are regular givers to Rehoboth!

In Loving Memory

We received some very sad news this morning. One of our most faithful and trusted leaders in Haiti has passed away. He was recently interned in the hospital with high blood sugar and we had been told that he was back home. Praying and hoping that this was only a setback from which he would recover, we were shocked to learn that he had passed on.

Ramcès Payoute

Ramses Payoute worked for Rehoboth Ministries for 31 years. He served on the church committee as the bookkeeper and oversaw the money which came into our main church from offerings supplied by its members, then presented us with a weekly report. He always had a second man with him to count the money, but Ramses was our chief financial officer. We are full of sorrow this day. He was a faithful member of our congregation and he left behind a spotless record. I remember hearing Prit say, ”I have never missed a dime with Ramses over the finances.” His faithfulness, wise counsel, and great attitude will be sorely missed. Our hearts go out to his wife and family during this time and we feel a great void in knowing that he is no longer among us and that we cannot be there to celebrate his homecoming. But, even through the tears, we can say, ”Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been received into your Heavenly home.” Our loss is Heaven’s gain. May the Lord raise up many more ”Ramceses” to serve Rehoboth Ministries in Haiti. Unfortunately, all our pictures are in Haiti and someone sent us this copy. It will have to do.

Would you remember his family in your prayers today? A mighty tree has fallen.

19…and counting!

Great news! We have received some new donations for our Bible Institute fundraiser. Starting with a goal of $25,000, it has been reduced to $19,000. Thank you SO much to those of you who have sown into this fundraiser!

Would you like to help us? No gift is too small (or large!) Better yet, how would you like to share the journey with a student and give monthly so that he (or she) could cross the finish line? Now, that’s an investment! This fundraiser is also to help raise the salaries of our teachers to ease the many financial hardships of living in Haiti.

38 Years Today!

Today marks 38 years since we left North Carolina to move to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Talk about culture shock! As we descended the steps of the plane, unfamiliar smells and the merciless heat of Haiti rose up to meet us. At the bottom of the steps stood a whole line of ”Tonton Macoutes” watching us. The Tonton Macoutes were President Jean-Claude Duvalier’s private police, better know as his henchmen. They struck fear into the hearts of the Haitian people and foreigners alike. Their dark sunglasses prevented us from seeing their eyes, but they could see us. Each one held his own Uzzi submachine gun. For a naive girl from rural North Carolina, the sight of them left an indelible print in my memory.

That was only the beginning of our adventure. Five years later, we left Port-au-Prince and moved to the old colonial capital of Cap-Haitian to plant churches. Now, we have a network of four churches and four schools, a 4-year Bible institute that just graduated its 10th promotion, a feeding program that feeds over 1,200 children five days a week, plus we are helping university students get a degree. It’s a good thing that we didn’t know all that history would unravel over the years. But, the faithfulness of God was repeated time and time again over those 38 long years! Many of you have long-supported this work with your prayers and offerings and your implication has been absolutely vital. We could not have accomplished all that we did without the help from co-workers. If you’re not a partner with Rehoboth, maybe you would consider joining the team? Pray for us and for Rehoboth Ministries!

“If the Lord had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence” Psalm 94.17 ESV

Through Veiled Tears

There is rarely a day when I do little else but cry. But, today was one of those rare days. There were various reasons for these tears, not just one item. I’m tempted to cry again because I already wrote a post which required a lot of tweaking, but it disappeared into the Never, Never Land of WordPress.com

John left yesterday. I heard the door close at 3:00 a.m. and he used his rented car to drive to Raleigh. There, he could fly to Ft. Lauderdale and catch the flight to Cap-Haitian instead of taking the longer flight through Charlotte and missing his connecting flight to Haiti. We had a wonderful two weeks with him. But, no matter how young or old they are, your children are still your children. I’m thankful he’s safely back in Haiti, but his absence made me weepy. Miss you Son!

Yesterday, I could hardly stand for two minutes without sitting down due of a total lack of energy. Even though I haven’t had the bad reaction which I had from the first round of chemotherapy, it can be very humbling to be so tired that your strength doesn’t match the goals in your head. Today was better, but I’m still having to listen to my body and respect what it’s telling me. I studied my bridal portrait hanging on our bedroom wall today. I told my husband, ”Oh, to be 25 again. I sure wish I had her energy!” And I cried. I guess my body just needed the release.

I spent a lot of time praying today through veiled tears. But, even so, as I poured out my frustration to the Lord about these and so many other things, the prayers seemed to have a cleansing effect. I prayed for dear friends who have found themselves in what seemed to be utterly hopeless situations. My heart ached for them and I lifted them up on the altar. As I turned my attention to others and wept for them, I sensed a shift in my spirit.

A friend sent me a card this week to remind me she’s thinking of and praying for me. There was a line she wrote which seemed to literally jump out at me: ”I hope you are ”thanksliving!”, she wrote. It seems the Lord never fails to bring me back to this point of simply giving thanks for what we do have and for all that we’ve received from his hand. There is a secret to practicing the giving of thanks. The Lord takes great delight in our humbling ourselves before Him and acknowledging our gratefulness for all He’s done for us. It also takes our minds off ourselves and enables the Lord to begin a deeper work.

I sincerely thank all our readers for your earnest prayers for me. I have prayed for you too. I better stop there…..for I’ll get weepy all over again. 🙂

My Faux Pas

Sorry about that…

In our last post, I shared with you the needs for our Bible institute and what we need for the upcoming year. This will enable us to raise our professors’ salaries as well as provide scholarships for our students. John said he told me the goal would be $25,000, but somehow I heard $20,000. Sorry about that! I’ll blame it on chemo fatigue!

So here’s the update: We have a $25,000 fundraiser going for our Bible institute and a $5,000 gift has already been given! This brings us down to the present goal of $20,000. Yay! Would you like to help send a student to school or enable a Bible school professor to receive relief in providing for his family without wondering how he’s going to make ends meet? Here’s your opportunity!
