Wednesday, I had my third round of chemo. Thursday, I felt better than I had in a long time. I even felt like the old me! But, by Friday, I began the familiar descent into untold weakness and the attempt to stand on wobbly legs which could only carry me so far. I have slept and slept, only to wake up and sleep some more…. But, even during these times, I am reminded of my human frailty and utter dependence upon God and others.
In addition to giving thanks in all things, I have learned to even find humor in these situations. Today, I sat at the dining room table and gave Prit step-by-step instructions for making macaroni and cheese. Since it was a small amount, I told him to open up the can of chicken noodle soup and heat it up too. John is back home from Haiti and we planned to have a “threesome meal.” Somewhere between making these two meals, Prit thought that I had said to combine them. So, we had a new dish of macaroni and cheese + chicken soup. We had a good laugh over it and it was actually quite good! Prit gave me permission to share this tale because he’s good at poking fun at himself. In his defense, for someone who is not comfortable in the kitchen, he has made multiple trips back and forth to the kitchen to fetch Gatorade or some other item and constantly asks me if I need anything. Though it’s been a rough three days, I am blessed and encourage you to try to find the humor in it all! Here’s a scientifically known fact about laughter:
Fact: Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
