So Many “Dorvils”… plus Update on Dana

This is one of the many students attending a school in Rehoboth’s network. (This is not little Dorvil.)

I received a message from one of our pastors in Haiti the other day. The lady who supervises the cooks on one of our compounds brought forth a complaint concerning a student. Since our feeding program is monitored closely to avoid any waste, she discovered that little Dorvil had eaten in the classroom, yet appeared in the kitchen asking for another plate of food. After two of our pastors called forth young Dorvil to reprimand him, their hearts melted when he explained his situation to them of virtually receiving no food at home. Our schools only provide one hot meal five days a week. The rest of the time (particularly the weekends), these children depend on their parents for food. Often, they find very little at home. There are so many “Dorvils” and yet, in one of our schools in the countryside, there are NO students receiving a hot meal.

If you are reading this and are not a regular giver to our feeding program, would you please consider joining the ranks of those who are already giving? Haiti is in dire straits and our pastors and teachers see it up close on a daily basis. No gift is too small. We would be thankful for whatever you can give. The information is below and all you have to do is earmark your check or online offering “feeding”. We’ll take care of the rest!

Update on Dana

My post-surgery appointment was this past Wednesday. The doctor was extremely pleased with the results. On November 11, I will return to remove the drains that continually fill with blood. They have to be emptied twice a day, then recorded as to how many centimeters of blood each drain produced, morning and evening. This past week has included sleep, sleep, and more sleep. In between times, I would work a little here and there on the ministry. It is impossible to ignore that altogether — even though we have many leaders in place in Haiti. The overseeing of the finances, secretarial work, communication with donors, updates on this website, monthly reports for the feeding program, end of the month letters to our donors, transfers, and the list goes on and on, rest on mine and Prit’s shoulders. It is imperative to keep our fingers on the pulse of the daily activities of Rehoboth Ministries in Haiti. We certainly identify with Paul’s comment in (2 Corinthians 11.28 ; GNT) :

“And not to mention other things, every day I am under the pressure of my concern for all the churches.

We want to render a good account in the end for our service to Him, so whether we’re there or not, Haiti is ever before us. In spite of anything I’ve faced, the hardships of the people we serve are so much greater. We fully appreciate your giving into this great ministry and, of course, your prayers for Rehoboth and for my health to be fully restored.

Just Ask Vilvert!

Institut Biblique de l’Alliance de Grâce

1 hr  · Over the next few weeks, I’ll be introducing you to our new students. This is Vilvert Eliakim. He is originally from Port-Margot (a town a couple hours out into the country) but ended up in Cap-Haitien after his sister fell ill and required long-term care. For him, coming to Bible college was the fulfillment of a word he received 8 years ago.

“I received a call to ministry in 2012. An evangelist laid his hands on me and prayed over me. I didn’t think much of it. I was studying agronomy. But God started using me. I prayed for some people who were sick and they were healed. I prayed for demon-possessed people and they were delivered. I was asked to preach in church and people received it well. Finally, I decided to go to seminary. I was going to go to somewhere else, but at the last minute, my pastor suggested I come here. I’m open to doing whatever God wants me to do.”

Post-Surgery Update

Greetings everyone! I feel the need to give a short update since my surgery on Tuesday, October 20. Many of you have communicated in so many ways — phone calls, cards, meals, prayers, acts of love and the list goes on….

So much is going on in the world as well with the elections close at hand, but most of my time has been spent sleeping. After a mastectomy and the removal of 20 lymph nodes under my left arm which were cancerous, we returned home and my energy has been in short supply. I am wearing a drain that collects my blood into two large plastic bulbs, so the continued bleeding is draining strength from me as well. On October 28, I will return to the doctor and have this tight ”wrap-around” to my torso removed so that I can breathe more easily. What a relief that will be! Then, we will have a discussion as to what my next step includes.

$20,000 Fundraiser

In case you didn’t see it, we have a fundraiser going for the Bible institute. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to cover all the professors’ salaries and the scholarships for our students for the year 2021. Would you like to help us meet this goal? If so, give online or by check and earmark your gift IBAG or Bible school so it will go directly into that fund. Many thanks to those of you who are already enabling us to train up leaders for the future of God’s work in Haiti.

Thanks again for your outpouring of love towards me during this time of recuperation.

Surgery Date

Please pray for the surgeon and his team.

For all of you who have been asking, my surgery date has been set. Monday, we will go to Wilmington where I will have a dye injection. Then, on Tuesday, I will have my surgery. I’m so thankful to have Prit by my side. Your continued prayers would be much appreciated. As long as everything goes well, we will return home the same day. I am so ready to get on the other side of this and to start healing.

Thanks everyone for your many prayers and for your acts of kindness towards me. It’s during this time that I’ve realized how very rich I am. I’m also thankful for my supportive family. I ask for your patience post-surgery for I will not be typing much, but instead allowing my body to recuperate. I’m sure you’ll understand.

As I Wait…

So many of you have written and called. I wish I could answer all of you, but time and energy does not allow it. I was told my surgery would be this week. I have not heard from anyone and even left a message with the doctor. I will be meeting with an oncologist here in Jacksonville about radiation and chemotherapy treatment post-surgery. I never dreamed it would take this long.

Meanwhile, there is much busy work with the ministry as well as in other areas that I’ve been working on. Not knowing how I will feel after the operation, I am using this time to get things caught up. Also, we just spent wonderful three days with our daughter, Deb, and our two beautiful grandchildren, Sam and Lorelei. My cup is full! 🙂

Please continue to remember me in your prayers. Many thanks to those of you who have given financially to help us during this time. Thank you to the Enon Ladies’ Sewing Group who gifted me with a beautiful quilt today! Your thoughtfulness means so much to me.

On another note, we are doing a fundraiser for our Bible institute. This will help cover professors’ salaries for the next year and scholarships for Bible school students. We are excited about our ”leaders in the making” and, in spite of many delays in having classes due to rioting in the country of Haiti and then the effects of the Pandemic, these students have pushed forward in their studies. We are so proud of their tenacity and our professors’ diligence. Please take a look at the wonderful post that our son, John, wrote today. Here’s the link: https://backtohaiti.com

The Plan’s in Motion

Today I saw the doctor in Wilmington. Next week, I will be scheduled for a mastectomy. Fortunately, the scans I had last week revealed the cancer had not spread. Since the lymph nodes cannot be seen on the scan, there is no way to tell until the operation itself whether the cancer has traveled to them. So, my prayer requests are 1) a safe and quick operation, 2) that there will be no cancer in the lymph nodes nor the removal of those nodes, plus 3) a quick recovery time.

I am glad for the fact that this chapter is coming to an end. It’s not what any woman wants, but It’s time to get on with my life and the ministry to which the Lord has called me.

I continue to be overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and care from friends who have never stopped praying for me and, of course, for our Haitian friends who have always remembered me during my time of pain and weakness. Thanks for the visits, the meals, the offerings, the phone calls, the cards and letters and, most of all for your prayers! God is faithful.
