We have been back stateside for a few weeks now. This means we send transfers down to Haiti to pay for salaries, university students’ tuition, feeding the hungry, and the list goes on and on. The exchange rate changes almost daily there. It cost $28 (US) just to send our last transfer (what the bank took). The taux de la gourde (exchange rate) for our last transfer was 22.4. We sent a transfer for $2,000 and, after the bank took their part, there as $1,972 left over.
Math was always my poorest subject in school, so Mr. Lee (my math teacher) would probably laugh at the thought of me with my calculator in hand going back and forth between US and Haitian currency. Maybe the Lord just wants to keep me dependent on Him!
All this makes my head spin and I think of how simple it would be to do all our work in only one currency! But… if you really want to get confused, Haitians actually think in gourds. $1 H = 5 gourds. The $2,000 US we sent x 22.4 gourds = $44,800 gourds or divided by 5 to get the dollar amount is $10,000 Haitian dollars. Are you confused yet? With the ever-changing exchange rate, that $2,000 becomes a different calculation each time we send a transfer. Perhaps the constant going back and forth with exchange rates and speaking in a foreign language on a daily basis will help keep my mind nimble now that I just turned 64. 🙂
But here’s the good news! Your giving enables us to, not only fight the inflation we see in Haiti, but to help those in great distress. $1,000 of that transfer was to help feed hungry families. In our last transfer, we were able to send $500 to our church that’s furtherest out from Cap-Haitian. This is because we have Rehoboth supporters who send funds on a monthly basis. Thanks to all of you who are making a huge IMPACT in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Haiti!
