The Broken Candy-Cane

child

( I have been reminded today of something that happened many years ago at our main compound. I guess, since it’s #Giving Tuesday, this story came to my mind. )

We had a young guest speaker who was sharing a devotional with our school kids.  The speaker’s subject was about giving wholeheartedly. It was a good teaching. He was making the point that, when we give, we should give royally. At that point, he held up a broken candy cane which had fallen on the ground and was dirty. He then said, ”If I offered this to one of you, you wouldn’t want this broken and dirty candy cane, would you?” He didn’t wait for them to respond assuming that they would reject the gift. After all, he had used the same illustration in other countries and the children would instantly and indignantly reply, ”Noooo!”

Yet, I watched our school kids’ eyes grow large as he held up the broken piece of candy and could see that these children would have happily taken him up on his offer.  You see, these children didn’t eat on a regular basis and knew what real hunger was. As the young man continued with his devotional, I studied the little ones’ bewildered eyes and offered up yet one more silent plea for the Lord to make a way for us to have a feeding program for our more than 1200 students in three schools. I’m happy to say that the Lord did answer that prayer. Thanks to the wonderful ministry of Orphans Promise and donors who give on a regular basis, we can ensure that these kids eat one hot meal five days a week.

Our schools are continually growing and, as we establish new church plants, we also plant a new school. This means an increase in the number of children who are coming to us to get both a Christian education… and a hot meal. Would you consider sowing into this need and be the answer to yet one more silent plea for help to feed hungry children? It’s #GivingTuesday and YOU CAN make a difference!
