Our leaders in Haiti are reporting to us how very serious the situation is there. Because of the ongoing demonstrations against the government, which are organized by high-powered officials and well-organized gangs, the situation has not gotten any better. Haitians who do have a job are not able to go to work due to the unrest in the streets. Those who would bring their goods in from the countryside to market are forced to sit at home waiting for the storm to pass. Parents are trying to soothe crying babies and children due to the lack of food in their homes. Schools are still closed and those who work so hard to get an education, whether adults or children, are denied the freedoms that we enjoy here in America.
There is good news, however. Our appeal for help with the food crisis has been met with some very generous giving. We have raised $2,407 so far to send in a transfer to Haiti. We have been told that it would be safer to put a little money into someone’s hands and let them go buy food rather than hand it out in our churches. They do not want to draw attention from thugs in the neighborhood that “free food is available” and risk harm to themselves. During brief periods of calm, the people can go quickly to buy small portions of food for themselves.
Thank you for responding to our Haiti/Food Drive initiative. We find it very difficult to enjoy the freedoms we have here knowing that our Haitian brethren, who have prayed us through many trials, are once again suffering. Will you continue to give and pray for Haiti? Will you encourage others to give as well?
