A New Thing

“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” (Isaiah 43.19 ESV)

OIP.py1g4KXdBEA5qseja-vM5wHaFjI woke up from a dream this morning. In my dream I had a baby girl. I knew it was prophetic, for I don’t believe at age 63 I’ll be having any more children. This baby gave me such incredible joy. She had the most infectious laugh and it made me laugh too. She never cried, but laughed throughout the whole dream. I believe that as the world is gripped by fear, this dream was meant to breathe hope and joy into my life and to others as well. Even those who have experienced deep sorrow and loss can recapture the unspeakable joy that only the Lord can give.

Today, as you sit in your home and wonder how many more people will be ravaged or even die from this pandemic, I pray for you. I pray that in the midst of your distress, you will look up and experience the new. Maybe it’s new ideas of how to do things, a new way of looking at things, a new joy, and new expectations. It’s a new normal, but God is always doing something fresh and is not limited by the stale and the mundane.

I encourage you to embrace the NEW. Perhaps it’s just a new level to your prayer life He wants to birth into your spirit to drown out the voices which are occupying your time and feeding your fear. This can be an exciting phase in your life. Our churches in Haiti were not able to gather and pray this morning, but that will not inhibit the prayers and power that will be unleashed from their homes. On the contrary, this may be a good break to recapture a new regard for united prayer. He’s doing a new thing. Do you not perceive it?

I Dream Of Marmalade Jelly

OIP.XDenUQHGzro5XTCxMOaJmAHaJ3The waitress at IHOP this summer kept bringing me little packets of orange marmalade jelly when she saw how much I loved them. Now that’s my kind of waitress! We are in Haiti and there’s no jelly of any kind, but somehow it helps to think on better things — yes, (even little things) like marmalade jelly.

We have been following all the news that’s happening stateside (and worldwide) concerning the Coronavirus. We are like you. Everything’s shut down here – schools, churches, businesses. We have not left our compound for several days and very few people are allowed to come visit. But, we are ok and thankful for the internet and are able to communicate with friends and family from home.

For the Haitian people, however, this is a new low. Most of us have enough funds to stock up for several days. Our Haitian friends live hand to mouth and have no refrigerators or stoves. They cook on charcoal. Most of them shop at the marché (outdoor market) and the little amounts that their money will buy is what they carry home to their hungry families. But, today, they are closing the marchés to avoid further spread of the virus and only the government knows when they’ll reopen.

The fact that Haitians don’t live in spacious homes but in tight-packed communities opens up further risk. Many of them are terrified of this virus. Not having all the amenities that other countries provide, their life is in each other and the church. I’m sure they’re not dreaming of marmalade jelly, but of a better Haiti, one that functions normally.

While you have this time on your hands, would you remember to pray for them? They are praying for you. If you feel led to ease some of their burdens, would you send an offering to Rehoboth? Help us help them. Meanwhile, let’s all continue to pray that the Lord will give our leaders wisdom to combat this foe and that we can return to a normal life. Our strength is in unity, not division.

39 Stripes

god-1772560__480Here in Haiti, we have been following all the events which have taken place in the last few days concerning the Coronavirus. Panic and pandemonium have set in and it hurts our hearts to see the unleashed fear that has hit our nation and the world. Thanks to this pandemic, the normalcy of everyday life has almost come to a grinding halt. We won’t even talk about what this is doing on a grand scale to businesses and other services that we have always taken for granted. One thing’s for sure, FEAR can cripple a nation. Those in the health industry are being tested to the point of exhaustion due to the alarming number of folks showing up at hospitals to get tested and those who are gravely ill are not getting the care they should have gotten due to the increase in volume. Of course, we are not condemning anyone who is taking precautions, but the fear which has gripped our nation is a crippling fear and is not God’s best for you if you are a believer. May I share some good news with you?

The Bible tells us in Isaiah 53:5: “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” By stripes, it is referring to the lashes that were placed upon Jesus’ back. Jesus paid for our healing. He loved us so much that he submitted under the crack of the whip which the seasoned Roman soldier so expertly exerted upon him. It is said that there are 39 major diseases in humankind — that all other sicknesses branch from these major illnesses. According to the Jewish law, those who were whipped received 39 lashes. Whether Jesus’ received 39 lashes or 40 is of no consequence. What matters is that he submitted to the torture of the moment and that his subsequent death on the cross bought about our spiritual and physical healing. Now, that’s some great news in light of the mayhem that is taking place in our nation (USA) and other nations as well! Since there is a ”Fear not…” for every day of the year in the Bible, you have a ”Fear not” for today!

If this doesn’t get you excited, meditate on Psalm 91 and let that become your prescription for today and it will fill your mind with peace. It is so rich and just these verses alone can feed you for a lifetime:

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee

Prayer for John and for others

This week John was invited to visit a Bible College in California. He’ll travel from there to Richmond, VA, and then back to Haiti next week. Here’s what he had to share. Please pray for his safe return.

89450606_10156729575437294_3824045323362238464_n”I spent the day at SUM Bible College close to Sacramento. This innovative school is providing fully accredited theological education at extremely affordable rates to people all over the world thanks to the Internet. I wish they had a program in French so our Bible college could join in from Haiti! My friend Manny is in the process of launching a cohort in Richmond, Va. I’ll be at his church on Sunday to share the Word.”  John

Coronavirus

Even though we are in Haiti, we are following the news very closely concerning all those who have been or may be affected by the Coronavirus. As far as we know, there have been no reports of this in Haiti. We pray for the Lord’s protection upon each and every one of you.

Happy Birthday, John!

82803300_10156589327172294_1551168924039512064_nToday, our firstborn has turned 35 years old. We celebrated early with a chocolate cake since he flew out yesterday to participate in some program instruction which relates to our Bible institute. We are so proud of John and all his accomplishments. He is such a hard worker and ever learning. The things he has contributed to Rehoboth Ministries are too many to number and this ministry is better off because of his contributions.

Happy Birthday, John and safe travels! We’re praying your trip will be fruitful and that you’ll meet folks who can become lifetime friends. Thanks also to Lux Church in Richmond, Virginia, for making John’s trip possible!
