Teamwork Pays

“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” – Phil Jackson

I grew up in a family who loved sports. My two older brothers played every sport our high school had to offer. I played basketball as well and still love the game. We would spend countless hours in the gym perfecting our strategies. I love the quote above by the former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls. Phil Jackson won eleven NBA championships, the most in NBA history. He won six titles with the Chicago Bulls and five titles with the Lakers, and is the only coach who has won multiple championships with more than one team. Why was he so successful? I believe there were many reasons, such as knowing how to recognize the potential of a player and what he brings to the team. He also knew how to bring different players’ giftings together allowing them to find their rhythm on the court. Michael Jordan (the Bulls) is thought of as the best basketball player of all time. But, even Michael knew he couldn’t win a championship all by himself.

We, here at Rehoboth Ministries, recognize how very dependent we are on other members of our team. Our leaders in Haiti are faithfully carrying on our work in our absence. They are an incredible team that continues to get the job done while we communicate from afar. You, our donors, are another essential element to this team. Some of you have a burden to feed children. Others want to help train up leaders. Still others have come and given your time to share your giftings with our people. Those of you who sow into this work (no matter what the capacity) are key players helping us to accomplish victories we never dreamed possible! Others have used your persuasiveness to encourage others to give after sharing your stories about the people of Haiti and the needs represented. Then there are the prayer warriors who prefer to remain ”incognito” that pray for the success of this ministry. We are so grateful for each and every one of you!

Thanks for helping us do the impossible.

When Destiny Comes Knocking

Maybe it’s the past year’s events that has me reminiscing. Our normal, daily lives have been turned upside since the events of the COVID virus was ushered in. All of us have learned to adjust to different schedules and the lack of freedom to come and go as we please. Some are still mourning over the lives of loved ones that the virus claimed.

Perhaps it’s my own situation with cancer and treatments which placed me on a different track since October when I had major surgery. It really goes back beyond this though with all the tests that determined my health status. Since last August, I was already going through that revolving door of seemingly endless tests, labwork, then a treatment plan.

James 4:14 says, ”Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

I’ve had a lot of time to reflect. There were days during chemotherapy treatment when all I could do was lie in the bed and rest. But, I did have time to think. I thought about how little time we have on this earth to make a difference. More than ever, I long to see dreams which have sat on the shelf be taken down, dusted off, and accomplished. We all have different dreams and expectations. Ours (ministry-wise) is knowing that we did everything we could to make an impact on Haiti with the Gospel. Part of this is making the lives of our Haitian friends more tolerable. Whether it’s giving a student the assurance that they can obtain a degree in our Bible institute or help another one receive a hot meal at school, or help destitute parents receive help for their children’s tuition – there is always a need to be fulfilled. Part of leaving the mark of the Gospel on others’ lives is meeting them at their deepest level of need.

Sitting on the back deck of our home this morning, I’m enjoying the cool breeze and the beautiful view of the woods. Haiti is far away, yet it’s ever present in our minds. I’m thinking of the longtime, faithful member of one of our churches who tried to seek help for her afflicted body, but didn’t have the means to have surgery. Although she’s been told she will end up in a wheelchair, she forces her body to get up and walk over a mile to get to church. Then, there are others who are young, have their strength and are willing to work – yet the job training is not available or they can’t afford it.

There are two ways of looking at this scenario. We can throw up our hands in despair or we can see that destiny has come knocking on our door to make a difference in the lives of others. Would you like to become a Rehoboth partner and help us affect the destiny of others and thereby affect your own? Destiny is calling!

Good News All Around!

I haven’t posted in a while. I have been finishing up radiation treatments and am all done! It’s been so nice to not have to make that daily trek to radiology. I do want to say that the Radiation – Oncology Department in Jacksonville (NC) has my highest praise. I thank Dr. Ross and all the technicians for their positive attitudes, professionalisn, and encouragement towards me. I’ve even felt more energetic these last few days. Thanks everyone for your sincere prayers! My 25 treatments were even reduced to 16 and I finished early!

More great news! Our Bible School fundraiser goal has shot up significantly. It is now $20,309! Our goal is $25,000 and that leaves a difference of $4,691.Thanks to everyone who has given SO generously. We are almost there!

We are happy to say that Denise Ham, (the secretary for The Lord’s Table Church) and her husband are better after a serious bout with the CoVid Virus. Denise is a great friend and a valuable asset to Rehoboth Ministries She oversees the weekly funds that come in for Rehoboth, deposits them in the bank, then sends us a report of who gave what each week. This is a ministry of The Lord’s Table Church in Goldsboro, NC — to oversee the deposits of the missionaries they support. We couldn’t be more grateful for their help. So glad she and hubby are better!

One last piece of good news is that the sweetest little boy in the whole world turned 7 years old on 7 April. We love you to the moon and back, Sam Edelen!

A special thanks to all the thoughtful folks who have showered me with cards filled with the sweetest and most thoughtful notes anyone could receive. My cup runs over!
