In Haiti, May 18 is Flag Day, a national holiday commemorating the sewing of the first Haitian flag in 1803. According to legend, seamstress Catherine Flon tore the white center out of the French tricolor, symbolizing permanent separation from Napoleonic France. She then sewed the blue and red bands together to represent the union of the black and mixed-race peoples of the island into a republic founded on liberty, equality, and brotherhood.
